She just kind of flies by the seat of her pants. Why is she the way she is? Why is she such a firecracker? It's mixed with personality, but also from her past, and then on top of being a protective mother, I think she just doesn't know. She's been through tremendous trauma in her life, and I also wanted the audience to feel empathetic towards her. You know what I mean? So that is the part that I wanted - I wanted people to relate to her: "Oh my god, my Auntie Janice is like that," or "My whoever is like that," "My cousin - oh, jeez, Jessica's gonna be there? Okay, great." You know what I mean? Kind of like that!īut also, Maggie is in a lot of pain. Well, I know that we all probably have a family member like Maggie, who's just a little bit loose at the edges and just, at every family function, gets in trouble. How did you find that balance between her flaws and her likeability? One of the things that stood out for me is that Maggie gets to be messy, which is something we rarely see of women on TV. She masks her feelings and emotions with everything around and distractions, whether it's men, alcohol drugs, but at the bottom of the line is she loves her son more than anything in the world and would do anything to protect him. She's a product of her mother and her grandmother, and she does the best that she knows how. She's a product of transgenerational trauma. So she just is a product of her environment. You know, I understand that feeling of you would do anything to protect your baby.ĭoing research for her and creating her character and working on her character, I just have tremendous compassion for her because she has been through so much in her life, and there hasn't been any healing with Maggie. I had been auditioning for mama parts the last two years and it didn't really click to me, that actual feeling, until I had my son. I relate to that mama bear feeling now, for real. There's a few different aspects of Maggie that I relate to. Which aspect of Maggie's character do you relate to the most and why? ![]() You're gonna have the time of your life tonight. You guys, fasten your seat belts, because Maggie is a loose cannon! We probably will get into a fight at the bar. And how do you take a full-on The Son of a Trickster novel and turn it into six episodes? How difficult would that be? I think we need more in Season 2! There is so much going on, I was surprised to see Season 1 is only six episodes long! There's a lot going on: supernatural, family story, Indigenous representation.
